Safe Working Procedures When Using Chain Blocks

H-Lift

When using chain hoists, following safety procedures is crucial to prevent accidents and ensure safe operation. Here are the key safety working procedures:
  1. Pre-Use Inspection: Always inspect the hoist before use. Check for any signs of damage or malfunction, including bent handles, stretched hooks, or broken components. Do not use a hoist that appears overloaded or damaged.
  2. Understand Capacity: Know the weight of the load and never exceed the hoist's rated capacity. Using two hoists for a single load is not advisable, as it can lead to uneven weight distribution and potential failure.
  3. Proper Use: Do not use the hoist to lift or support people, and avoid wrapping the lifting chain around the load. Ensure the hoist is aligned correctly, forming a straight line from hook to hook in the direction of the load.
  4. Safe Lifting Practices: Lift loads slowly and steadily, avoiding jerking or bouncing motions. Always ensure the load is evenly applied and check that it is coming up level before lifting it higher.
  5. Avoid Hazards: Keep all personnel clear of the load being lifted. Do not allow anyone to work or stand under a suspended load, and use tag lines to control the load if necessary.
  6. Follow Manufacturer Guidelines: Read and understand the manufacturer's manual for specific operational protocols and maintenance recommendations. Regularly lubricate the hoist as advis
  7. Post-Operation Procedures: After completing the lifting operation, return the hoist to its designated storage location, keeping it dry and protected from moisture.

By adhering to these procedures, operators can significantly reduce the risk of accidents and ensure the safe use of chain hoists.

Here are the key steps to use a hand chain hoist safely:
  1. Verify the tonnage and never overload the hoist. Ensure the weight is within the hoist's capacity.
  2. Conduct a thorough pre-use inspection to confirm the hoist is in good working condition before each use.
  3. Check the upper and lower hooks to ensure they are firmly attached and not skewed. The lifting chain should hang vertically with no twisted links.
  4. Lift slowly and check for any issues like kinks in the chain after it is tightened before proceeding with the full lift.
  5. Stand in the same plane as the hand chain wheel and pull clockwise to raise and counterclockwise to lower the load gradually. Avoid diagonal pulling.
  6. Use even, gentle force to avoid chain jumping or snapping. Stop immediately if the hand chain cannot be pulled smoothly.
  7. Never stand on or work under suspended loads. Use wooden piers for temporary suspension if needed.
  8. Do not exceed the specified lifting height to prevent damage to the hoist
  9. When used tilted or horizontally, reduce the load by 50%, adjust the chain direction, and add support chains. Use a pad at the chain entrance for horizontal use.
